The presence of
plants in today's polluted environment is very important. Plants sustain life on earth, producing
life-giving oxygen and removing airborne pollutants. Human beings have a symbiotic
- or mutually beneficial - relationship with the animals and plants of our living world.
Including the design of houseplants into each building would help provide an environment
that mimics the way that nature cleans the earth's atmosphere.
Plants look attractive and can soften the hard, architectural lines of
modern building and bring a little nature indoors. The cold, impersonal
reality of concrete and steel is softened by the cool, peaceful effect of
live foliage. Plants have psychological benefits, instilling a sense of wellbeing
and reducing staff absence. They create a green welcome and influence behaviour
and their presence has been shown to increase productivity.
