Human beings have a symbiotic - or mutually beneficial - relationship with the animals and plants of our living world. Plants sustain human and animal life not only as a source of food and medicine, but also by producing oxygen and removing airborne pollutants.

Modern buildings are often hermetically sealed to prevent heat loss and gases such as benzene and formaldehyde from synthetic materials as well as the solvents, glues and resins used in the manufacture of modern furnishings, are trapped inside, making the indoor air quality sometimes poorer than the outside (especially if new carpets, furniture or soft furnishings have been placed in the room. These airborne pollutants are known as Volatile Organic Compounds, or VOCs. Modern building materials as well as electronic devices are also known to emit various VOCs.
